7 Ways to Savor Your Summer Break

We all know summer flies by! Have you ever ended your summer thinking, "Where did all that time go!?" as you look around at all of your projects still undone? Or maybe you DID get your projects done, but in August, you realize that you didn't actually have any fun! Let's put a stop to this crazy summer cycle with 7 easy ways to savor your summer break.

1. Take a trip.

This can seem so obvious, but it's so important! As teachers, sometimes the money isn't there for a huge vacation, but don't let that stop you from getting out and having some fun! All inclusive resorts are a great way to travel on the cheap, plus you don't have to worry about shelling out extra cash for margaritas! If that's too much, where can you take a day trip? Can you borrow a tent? Go stay at an AirBNB? Whatever it is, get out of your "normal" and go experience the amazing world around you.

2. Perfect something. Anything!

Nothing can make you feel more accomplished than nailing something perfectly. Is it your grandma's cupcake recipe? Watercolor painting beaches? Finally getting a yoga position down that you've been working on? Pick something specific. You probably won't be able to become a chef in one summer, a master yogi, or a famous painter, but you CAN get really good at one thing. This will make you feel so confident, happy, and help you get in touch with your fun side.

3. Learn to lean into the moment

It's so easy to let your summer pass you by without ever really stopping to enjoy it when we don't learn to be present in the moment. This can seem so hard to do when our mind is constantly focused on our to-do lists, worries, the future, or the past. One of our favorite ways to get started in practicing presence is to do a nature walk. Go for a walk, and shut off all distractions. No phone, no music, no Podcasts. Just go for a walk and notice the amazingness around you using all five of your senses. Appreciate the beauty of the trees, smell the sea salt air, listen to the birds, and focus on your breathing deep, full breaths.

4. Nail down your morning routine (most days!)

One of the most life changing things you can do for yourself is establish an energizing morning routine. There are so many people out there telling you the formula for the perfect morning routine, but you have to find what works for YOU. What elements should your morning routine include to set you up for success?

  • Exercise/movement. Boost your metabolism first thing in the morning and start your day off with high energy levels!

  • Nutritious breakfast. Quit skipping the most important meal of the day!

  • Mental workout. This could be reading, journaling, meditation, gratitude walk, etc.

5. Enjoy your loved ones.

Let's not forget one of the most important parts of summer break. Time to connect with the people you love. Go play with your kids, put on a swimming suit and play in the sprinkler. Bake with them, build LEGOS, and play games! Do something kind for your partner. Leave them a note, bake them their favorite treat, or surprise them with a date night. Surprise your friend or your mom! Take them a coffee, grab lunch, or invite them over for afternoon cocktails because it's summer break!

6. Get outside!

This is possibly the most important thing on the list, second only to enjoying your loved ones. If it's steaming hot where you live, get outside first thing in the morning and in the evenings. Get into nature as much as you possibly can. Aim for at least 3 hours a day outside. An easy way to do this is do things you do anyway outdoors. Eat breakfast on your porch, have a picnic lunch, read a book in the shade, go for a walk, whatever you can possibly do outside, do it! There are countless benefits for your mind, body, and spirit!

7. Outline your days.

This is one of our secrets to not letting our summer get away from us. Before your day even begins, outline what you need to accomplish. Each Monday morning, outline what you need to do that week, then block it into the days you will do it. For example, if you have 10 things that need done, put 2 of them down for each day of the week so each day you know exactly what you need to do to reach your goals. It is summer break though, so be flexible! Move things around when needed and have some fun!
